Barbara Eichner has been invited to speak at the international conference “Wagner und Mendelssohn. Leitfiguren der Leipziger Musikgeschichte”, which will take place in Leipzig from the 23rd to the 25th of June. Her presentation analyses the presence and representation of these two composers, who were often seen to represent “conservative” and “progressive” styles, in the popular press, such as illustrated family journals. This rich resource has so far been overlooked, in favour of the more specialist music journals, and it gives a fascinating insight into the interests and concerns of the educated middle-class reader and listener.
