Sound on Screen Research Unit
Sound on Screen Research Unit
The Sound on Screen research unit brings together academics from across the School of Arts with an interest in relationships between sound and visuals on screens.
Following on from our successful online inaugural conference in 2021, we are currently organising a second hybrid conference to be held at Oxford Brookes in July 2023. In future, we intend to hold a biennial conference, with alternate years dedicated to focussed events exploring more specific and topical areas of interest. Our events are designed to encourage a broad range of speakers from across academia and beyond, and we have particular interest in encouraging postgraduate students engaged in this growing field. Our conferences, past and present have their own dedicated website at www.soundonscreen.co.uk.
Sound on Screen research already features in the Film Music modules offered on the BA in Music, and will be integral to the new MA in Creative Industries and the BA in Music and Sound on Screen, currently in development. It will also contribute to the upcoming MA in Digital Humanities. Members of the Sound on Screen unit are engaged in outreach activities, working with local schools and encouraging public engagement and widening participation in this field.
Several of our members are experienced PhD supervisors, and we welcome inquiries from students wanting to undertake PhD study in this field. We also intend to collaborate with other networks focussed on film, television and video game music and sound across the UK and beyond, to extend our reach beyond Brookes.
