The power of storytelling, overcoming industry barriers, and reshaping the future of publishing will take center stage on 14th October during an upcoming conversation featuring Dr. Sarah Franklin, acclaimed author Kit de Waal, and Brookes Union President Goodness Odiaka.
Organized to address representation within the literary landscape, the forthcoming event will bring together perspectives from academia, student leadership, and professional creative writing. Dr. Franklin, a prominent lecturer in the School of Arts and member of the Society of Authors (SOA), will join Odiaka in moderating a candid discussion with Kit de Waal on how personal experience and community shape narrative voice.
During the session, de Waal will reflect on her journey into the writing world, pointing to systemic challenges and economic barriers that often prevent working-class and underrepresented writers from being heard. Drawing heavily on her literary work and involvement with the project Common People, de Waal will highlight how personal experience, community, and belonging can inform creative expression and offer new perspectives on whose stories are heard.
